Description

For your consideration is an exceptionally rare original manuscript commercial document signed by Otto von Bismarck (18151898), the architect of German unification and first Chancellor of the German Empire. Executed in Berlin and dated October 1873, the document measures approximately 8.5 5.5 inches (21.6 14 cm) and bears Bismarck’s contemporary autograph at lower right. Originating during the formative years of the newly established German Empire, it survives from the period in which Bismarck exercised unparalleled influence over European affairs as Imperial Chancellor and Minister-President of Prussia. The manuscript records a commercial transaction and bears a contemporary blue BEZAHLT (“Paid”) cachet associated with a Berlin bookseller or publishing concern, preserving an unusually intimate record of the routine administrative activities of one of the nineteenth century’s most consequential statesmen.
While Bismarck’s official correspondence and governmental papers were routinely preserved in institutional archives, ordinary financial and administrative documents connected with his daily affairs were seldom retained. Executed entirely in period manuscript hand, the present document preserves its original accounting entries, commercial endorsements, and business annotations, together with Bismarck’s characteristic working signature rendered in the rapid, abbreviated form commonly encountered on documents produced during the height of his political career. Unlike presentation autographs prepared for admirers or collectors, signatures of this nature were created for immediate administrative use and offer a direct connection to Bismarck’s working life.
The historical importance of the document is enhanced by its date. October 1873 fell less than three years after the proclamation of the German Empire in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles on 18 January 1871, when Bismarck was engaged in consolidating the institutions of the new Reich while shaping the diplomatic system that would dominate continental Europe for decades. The same year witnessed the formation of the League of the Three Emperors, one of Bismarck’s earliest and most significant diplomatic initiatives, reflecting the international influence he exercised during this formative period in modern European history.
Complete manuscript documents signed by Bismarck from the early Imperial era are encountered considerably less frequently than his later retirement correspondence or detached autograph specimens. Preserved intact with its original commercial markings, accounting annotations, and contemporary BEZAHLT cachet, the present manuscript constitutes a compelling historical artifact from the formative years of the German Empire and a tangible witness to the daily administrative activities of the statesman whose political vision transformed nineteenth-century Europe. Estimated date: October 1873. The document measures approximately 8.5 5.5 inches (21.6 14 cm) and exhibits expected filing folds, light age toning, minor handling wear, and contemporary business notations. The autograph remains bold, clear, and exceptionally well preserved.
