Description

For your consideration is an exceptionally rare and highly personal autograph note signed by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (19002002), written entirely in her hand at Clarence House on 21 November 1980 and preserved together with its original holograph envelope addressed by the Queen Mother herself. Executed on official Clarence House stationery bearing the crowned royal cipher, the note contains the exuberant manuscript exclamation, Yea! Yea! Yea!, followed by her characteristic royal signature, Elizabeth R. Unlike the formal correspondence, Christmas cards, presentation photographs, and secretarial communications that comprise the majority of surviving Queen Mother material, the present example preserves a spontaneous and intimate expression written entirely in her own hand. The accompanying envelope is likewise wholly holograph and bears her handwritten initials ER, forming a complete and remarkably personal survival from one of the most beloved figures of the modern British monarchy.

The recipient was the Right Honourable Norman St John-Stevas (19292012), among the most influential political and intellectual figures of post-war Britain. At the time of receipt he occupied a position at the very center of public life, serving as Leader of the House of Commons, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Minister for the Arts, and a member of the Cabinet of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. A distinguished constitutional scholar, author, barrister, and patron of the arts, St John-Stevas played a transformative role in modern parliamentary reform and was widely regarded as one of the leading cultural and intellectual voices within British public life.

Of particular significance was St John-Stevas’s longstanding relationship with the Royal Family. He moved comfortably within royal and aristocratic circles and maintained a close friendship with the then Prince of Wales, later King Charles III, sharing interests in architecture, conservation, religion, history, and the preservation of Britain’s cultural heritage. The surviving pencil notation on the envelope appears to reference a luncheon held on 18 December 1980 involving members of the Norfolk, Tennent, and Gilmour families together with St John-Stevas himself, further situating the correspondence within the highest social and political circles of late twentieth-century Britain.

The date of the note enhances its historical interest. Written in November 1980, it originates during a period of intense national attention surrounding the future of the monarchy and the public role of the Prince of Wales. Simultaneously, St John-Stevas stood at the height of his political influence, occupying some of the most senior offices of state only weeks before his departure from Cabinet during the January 1981 ministerial reshuffle. The correspondence therefore links two prominent figures whose influence extended across the political, cultural, and constitutional life of modern Britain.

Entirely holograph notes by the Queen Mother of such an informal and personal nature are distinctly uncommon. While signed photographs and ceremonial royal memorabilia survive in greater numbers, brief manuscript communications conveying a spontaneous sentiment, written and signed entirely in the Queen Mother’s hand and accompanied by their original hand-addressed envelopes, are encountered only rarely. Examples addressed to recipients of major historical significance are rarer still.

Preserved exactly as received, this exceptional royal manuscript archive combines complete holograph content, royal authorship, distinguished political association, and original postal accompaniment. More than an autograph, it represents a rare glimpse into the private social world that connected the British Royal Family with the highest levels of government, culture, and intellectual life during the closing decades of the twentieth century. As such, it constitutes a highly desirable and historically important example of modern British royal correspondence.

Letter approximately 5 x 8 inches (12.7 x 20.3 cm); envelope approximately 5.25 x 4.25 inches (13.3 x 10.8 cm). Condition commensurate with age and handling, preserved together with original envelope.
