For your consideration is an exceedingly rare and historically significant c.1908 Portuguese royal handwritten manuscript document, boldly autographed "El Rey" (I the King) by King Dom Manuel II of Portugal. This original document, which prominently features an embossed royal coat of arms seal of King Manuel II, is preserved in fine condition. Measuring approximately 18.75 by 15.25 inches, this manuscript is hand-signed in black fountain pen ink, exemplifying its authenticity and royal provenance. It stands as a museum-quality, one-of-a-kind piece that holds immense historical value.
Dom Manuel II, born on November 15, 1889, and known as "the Patriot" or "the Unfortunate," was the last monarch of Portugal. His ascension to the throne followed the tragic assassination of his father, King Carlos I, and his elder brother, Luís Filipe. Before becoming king, he was titled the Duke of Beja. His short-lived reign, characterized by efforts to stabilize and unify Portugal amid growing republican dissent, concluded with the revolution on October 5, 1910, which led to his subsequent exile in Twickenham, Middlesex, England.
During his reign, Manuel II's initial acts included dismissing João Franco, whose policies were thought to have contributed to the tragic events leading to his ascendancy. He then formed a government of national unity under Admiral Francisco Joaquim Ferreira do Amaral. Although intended to quell republican unrest, these actions were later viewed as indications of weakness.
Manuel II’s commitment to constitutional governance was evident when he opened the Royal Court Assembly on May 6, 1908, receiving widespread sympathy due to the recent royal assassinations. His reign was further defined by his efforts to foster a deeper connection with his subjects through extensive travels across Portugal, visiting cities from Porto to Coimbra, and engaging warmly with the populace.
This royal manuscript not only encapsulates a significant era in Portuguese history but also highlights King Dom Manuel II's personal efforts to navigate and lead a nation through a tumultuous period. For collectors, historians, or anyone fascinated by European royal history, this document offers a unique glimpse into the life and reign of Portugal's last king, making it an invaluable addition to any collection of significant historical artifacts.
