Attending to your merits and qualities, and wishing to confer upon you a public witness of my consideration and [illegible text]: Hey, for good to appoint you, Commander of the Royal Portuguese Military Order of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

King Ferdinand II (Dom Fernando II) (18161885) was a German prince of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha-Kohry who became King of Portugal through his marriage to Queen Maria II. Known as a \”King by marriage,\” Ferdinand earned his title after the birth of their first son, Pedro V, in 1837, as required by Portuguese law. Despite Maria II\’s death in 1853, Ferdinand played a vital role as regent for his son Pedro V until 1855.
