The photograph, measuring 7.0\” x 9.25\”, captures Prince Philips engagement with employees of Lisnave, including Gabriel Dias Ribeiro, who celebrated his 30th work anniversary on the same day. The visit is noted for Prince Philips graciousness in personally interacting with the company workers. Efforts were made to capture a photograph of this meaningful interaction, further emphasizing the personal connection Prince Philip sought to establish during his engagements. This original and unique piece is preserved in fine, original condition, reflecting the regal dignity and poise of the Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip, born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on June 10, 1921, was a member of the Greek and Danish royal families before becoming a central figure in the British monarchy. His life journey from exile in Greece as an infant to becoming the consort of Queen Elizabeth II is a testament to his resilience and dedication. After a distinguished career in the Royal Navy, where he served with distinction during World War II, Prince Philip married Princess Elizabeth in 1947. Upon their marriage, Philip renounced his Greek and Danish titles, adopted the surname Mountbatten, and was granted the titles Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich by King George VI. As consort, he played a pivotal role in modernizing the monarchy while maintaining its traditions.
This presentation photograph is a remarkable example of Prince Philips dedication to public service and international diplomacy. Known for his unwavering support of the Queen and his decades of service, Philip completed over 22,000 solo engagements and supported more than 780 organizations. His legacy includes initiatives such as the Duke of Edinburghs Award, which fosters self-improvement in young people, and his commitment to environmental conservation and sports like carriage driving.
The accompanying correspondence, dated March 8, 1977, provides additional context and insight into the significance of this photograph. Addressed to His Excellency John Wilson, the letter recounts the story of Prince Philips visit to Lisnave, where Gabriel Dias Ribeiro celebrated his 30th work anniversary. The writer expresses a desire to have the photograph signed by Prince Philip before presenting it to Ribeiro, highlighting the personal and ceremonial importance of this gesture. The letter reads:
March 8, 1977
His Excellency John Wilson
Ambassador of Her Britannic Majesty
Your Excellency,
During His visit to Lisnave – South Yard on the 600th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship and Alliance between our Countries, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was so gracious as to meet some of the persons working in the company.
One of these, Gabriel Dias Ribeiro, was asked how long he had worked in the company. The question was translated to him by Engr. Manuel Perestrello, then Lisnave\’s Managing Director. The answer was: \”Today is my thirtieth anniversary.\”
He joined CUF-Estaleiro Naval, a predecessor and actually the origin of Lisnave, on June 7, 1943. The day of Prince Philip\’s visit was June 7, 1973.
A photograph of His Royal Highness was taken during this dialogue. Unfortunately, Gabriel Dias Ribeiro was not facing the camera. Anyhow, he asked me for a copy.
Keeping in mind the remembrance of His Royal Highnesss understanding of the suggestion I had the honour to put forward of speaking with some of the members of our working family, now I would ask more: to have the enclosed photograph signed by His Royal Highness, before giving it to Gabriel. Is it possible?
Thanking Your Excellency, I am Your obedient servant,
[Signature]
