Description

For your consideration is an exceedingly rare and historically significant c.1942 Iraqi royal postage block set, boldly hand-signed \”Faisal\” by King Faisal II of Iraq. This remarkable artifact features a block of two stamps, measuring approximately 1.0 inch by 1.75 inches, and is hand-signed in blue fountain pen ink by Faisal II himself. Preserved in fine, mint condition, this new old stock set remains unused and uncirculated, making it a unique museum-quality treasure. Signed royal stamp blocks of this nature are exceptionally rare, particularly given the historical context surrounding Faisal IIs reign.

The stamps, signed in 1942 during the early years of Faisal IIs reign, represent an extraordinary philatelic and royal collectible. They were sent to the King by a collector requesting his autograph, a request graciously granted by the young monarch. This artifact stands as a tangible connection to Faisal IIs short yet historically impactful life, just three years before his assassination during the 14 July Revolution in 1958, which marked the end of Iraqs thirty-seven-year Hashemite monarchy.

Faisal II (19351958) was the last King of Iraq, ascending the throne at the age of three following the death of his father, King Ghazi, in a car crash. A regency under his uncle, Prince \’Abd al-Ilah, governed Iraq until Faisal came of age in May 1953. His reign coincided with a turbulent period in Iraqs history, marked by political instability, external conflicts, and growing opposition to the monarchy. Faisals early years included a period of exile during World War II, during which he and his mother were evacuated to the United Kingdom. While in exile, Faisal was educated at Harrow School alongside his cousin Hussein, the future King of Jordan.

In the later years of his reign, rising nationalist sentiment, the overthrow of the Egyptian monarchy, and the formation of the United Arab Republic intensified opposition to the Hashemite monarchy. Although Faisal served as the head of the Hashemite Arab Federation between Iraq and Jordan in 1958, it failed to quell widespread unrest. The monarchy was ultimately overthrown during the 14 July Revolution, during which Faisal, along with numerous members of his family, was executed, marking the end of Iraqs monarchy and the establishment of a republic.

This signed postage block is a profound artifact of Iraqs royal history and an extraordinary testament to the legacy of King Faisal II. Its pristine condition, combined with its historical and cultural significance, makes it an unparalleled addition to any collection of royal memorabilia, philatelic treasures, or Middle Eastern history. This unique piece bridges the realms of political history and collectible art, offering a tangible connection to a pivotal moment in Iraqs past.
