Description

For your consideration is an exceptionally rare and historically significant c.1855 porcelain compote or open tureen, officially issued for Her Majesty's Yacht (HMY) Osborne, the British royal yacht named after Queen Victoria's summer residence on the Isle of Wight. This antique piece, crafted by royal warrant for the yacht, exemplifies the luxurious artistry of its era and offers a remarkable connection to the British monarchy and maritime history.

The compote is original and features a 24K hand-painted gold and enamel cipher for HMY Osborne, complete with an anchor motif symbolizing its royal naval association. Measuring approximately 7.0 inches x 4.5 inches with a rim diameter of 4.5 inches, the piece is marked with the royal pink Minton porcelain hallmark, crowned to signify its prestigious origins. The porcelain is in fine condition, with no chips or repairs, though there is minor cracking and loss of glaze to a small, isolated section of the inner rim. It weighs 520 grams.

This exquisite artifact connects directly to the mid-19th century era when steam yachts, pioneered in 1823, became status symbols among European royalty and Victorian elites. HMY Osborne, renamed in 1855 from its previous incarnation as HMY Victoria and Albert, was the second royal yacht to carry the name and served the royal family for their travels, including significant voyages to Osborne House and abroad.

A museum-quality piece of maritime and royal history, this one-of-a-kind compote is authentic and correct, representing a pivotal period in British regal and naval heritage. It is a must-have for collectors of Victorian-era memorabilia or those with a passion for royal and maritime history.
