Description

For your consideration is an exceedingly rare and historically significant original antique c.1643 French royal handwritten manuscript document, boldly hand-signed "Christine" in black gallic fountain pen ink by Christine Marie of France, Duchess of Savoy. This remarkable artifact provides a tangible connection to one of the most prominent royal figures of 17th-century Europe. Authored during her tenure as regent of Savoy, the document reflects her active involvement in governance and her authority as a member of one of Europe’s most powerful royal houses.

The manuscript, measuring approximately 14.25 by 12.0 inches, is beautifully preserved on laid paper and features the original wax seal of the Duchess of Savoy. The seal includes a crown, cipher, and the coat of arms of the royal House of Savoy, affirming its authenticity and regal provenance. The document is in fine condition, museum quality, and a one-of-a-kind piece of royal history.

Christine Marie of France (1606–1663), born at the Palais du Louvre in Paris, was the third child and second daughter of King Henry IV of France and Marie de' Medici. As a "daughter of France," Christine was a pivotal figure at the French court. After the marriage of her elder sister Elisabeth to Philip IV of Spain in 1615, Christine assumed the honorary title of Madame Royale, denoting her rank as the most senior unmarried daughter of King Louis XIII.

In 1619, Christine married Victor Amadeus I, Duke of Savoy, becoming Duchess of Savoy. Her marriage strengthened the ties between France and Savoy, a strategically significant duchy in European politics. Following her husband’s death in 1637, Christine served as regent for her young son, Francis Hyacinth, Duke of Savoy, and later for Charles Emmanuel II. As regent from 1637 to 1648, she skillfully navigated the complex political landscape, balancing French and Spanish interests while maintaining Savoy's autonomy.

This document was signed during a period of significant political and social change in Europe. Christine’s leadership as regent is considered a critical phase in the history of Savoy, showcasing her diplomatic acumen and resilience in the face of external and internal challenges. Her role in preserving Savoy’s stability amidst shifting alliances and conflicts underscores her importance in European history.

For collectors, historians, and enthusiasts of royal memorabilia, this manuscript offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of 17th-century history directly connected to the French and Savoyard royal families. Its pristine condition, authenticity, and historical importance make it an invaluable addition to any collection focused on European royalty, diplomatic history, or the influential women of the early modern period.
